For patients
You have more options than you may have been told.
Pelvic organ prolapse is common, treatable, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Here's what to know — and what we're building.
What is a pessary?
A pessary is a soft, body-safe device placed inside the vagina by a clinician to support pelvic organs. It is the most common non-surgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse. Pessaries have been used safely for over a century — they are not new, they are not risky to try, and they can be removed at any time.
How is Smart Pessary different?
A regular pessary is a passive piece of silicone — it provides support and that's it. Smart Pessary is the same proven design, but with tiny sensors inside that can:
- Watch for early signs of irritation or infection before they cause problems
- Track how the device is fitting day-to-day
- Gently help strengthen your pelvic-floor muscles over time
- Give you and your doctor real information about how you're doing
What to expect
Smart Pessary is currently an investigational device, which means it is being tested and is not yet available outside of clinical studies. If you are interested in being part of future studies, you can register your interest through the contact form, and we'll let you know when sites are recruiting.
Frequently asked questions
Is pelvic organ prolapse my fault? ▾
No. POP is extremely common — affecting roughly 40% of women — and is driven by factors largely outside your control, including pregnancy, childbirth, aging, genetics, and menopause. It is not something you caused.
Do I need surgery? ▾
Not necessarily. Many women manage POP successfully with conservative treatment — pelvic-floor physical therapy and/or a pessary — for years or for life. Surgery is one option among several. ACOG recommends discussing all options before choosing.
Is a pessary uncomfortable? ▾
A well-fitted pessary should not be felt during normal activity. Discomfort usually means the size or shape isn't right — and your clinician can re-fit you. Discomfort is the most common reason women stop using a pessary, but it is also the most fixable.
Will Smart Pessary be covered by insurance? ▾
Standard pessary fittings are usually covered by insurance. We are working with payers on coverage pathways for Smart Pessary once it is commercially available.
How do I join a study? ▾
Send us a note through the contact form mentioning your location and interest. When studies open, we'll share information about participating sites. Participation in any clinical study is voluntary.
